This expertly modded Boss DD-3 pedal unlocks a remarkable level of creative control over your delay effects. Thanks to Robert Keeley’s signature modifications, it offers tonal versatility and modulation potential that surpasses many other delay pedals on the market.
The 3-way toggle switch is the heart of the tonal transformation. It allows you to choose between two analog-inspired settings and the original digital mode:
Left Position – Subtle High-End Rounding
This setting smooths the top end slightly, giving the repeats a warmer, more vintage character—perfect for subtle, musical delay that complements your playing.
Right Position – Enhanced Roll-Off
A deeper high-frequency roll-off creates a lush, mellow tone that excels in most musical contexts. This is Keeley’s personal favorite and is highly recommended for its musicality.
Middle Position – Stock DD-3 Mode
For those who love the pristine, crystal-clear repeats of the original DD-3, the center setting retains the stock digital delay voice with long, articulate repeats.
One of the standout features of this mod is the reimagined Direct Out, which has been converted into a TRS effects loop jack. Note: the original Direct Out no longer functions as before.
This loop allows you to insert external effects that process only the delayed signal, while your dry guitar tone remains completely unaffected. This separation opens up a world of sonic possibilities:
Chorus Pedal in the Loop:
Your clean tone remains intact, while the repeats become increasingly “chorused,” adding movement and depth to each echo.
Auto-Wah or Envelope Filter:
Each delay repeat is progressively more “wahed,” creating an evolving, expressive texture.
Pitch Shifter or Harmonizer:
Repeats take on an ethereal, pitch-shifted quality—ideal for ambient or experimental sounds.
Phaser / Flanger / Tremolo / Second Delay:
From swirling waterfall-like textures to wild asynchronous repeats and rhythmic tremolo pulses, the loop is your playground. Add a second delay pedal for stuttered, glitchy, motorboat-like effects, or insert a tremolo for swell-like dynamics akin to the coveted "Slow Gear" sound.
