Up for sale is a Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo, complete with its original hard shell case and case documentation. This instrument is in excellent condition, showing no noticeable damage or fretwear. It plays smoothly and sounds fantastic—everything you'd expect from a professional-grade banjo. Weighing in at 11.8 lbs, this banjo is solid, resonant, and performance-ready.
The Deering Sierra is the flagship model of Deering's entire line—and for good reason. Its pot assembly features the same high-quality components found in Deering’s top-tier models, including:
A violin-grade 3-ply maple rim
The powerful -06- tone ring
A one-piece zinc flange
A notched tension hoop
Deering tailpiece and armrest
These are the same components found in Deering banjos all the way up to the elite Gabriella, with only a few exceptions among signature models. For example, the Golden Era uses a different flange, the Hartford features a Grenadillo wood tone ring, and the Tenbrooks models use the Swiss-made Jens Kruger tone ring.
When the Sierra was first introduced, Deering focused on simplicity in cosmetics to keep the cost down—channeling all the value into the sound-producing components. The goal? To create a top-tier professional banjo that a young musician could realistically afford.
Now, thanks to modern manufacturing techniques, the Sierra boasts refined aesthetics inspired by the ornate craftsmanship of the Boston banjo makers of the early 20th century—without raising the price. The result is an instrument that combines rich sound, flawless playability, and timeless beauty.
Whether you're a seasoned player or an aspiring professional, the Deering Sierra offers a masterpiece of tone and craftsmanship at a price that's well within reach.
